The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
